Freedom of Speech Doesn't Mean Freedom From Consequences

I try to write things that are either personal in nature or at the very least concern a topic I'm interested in or passionate about. This whole 'Duck Dynasty' controversy doesn't fit either of those bills. I've never seen an episode of the show and generally couldn't care less what a redneck reality TV celebrity has to say about anything,

It's the growing sympathy for Phil Robertson that bothers me. In particularly all the people crying about the First Amendment.

The First Amendment guarantees us the freedom of speech, not the freedom to be immune to the results of that speech.

Until Mr. Robertson is arrested or censored by the government his freedom of speech has NOT been violated. No one has said he isn't allowed to speak his mind (no matter how much I may disagree with what he says). He, and all his supporters, just need to understand that anything that happens because of his words is no longer a constitutional issue. It's life.

If I was to start a website about my employer listing all the things I disagree with and praising our competition, I'd be fired. No one made me take down the website. No one told me I can't do that again with the next place I work. THOSE would be First Amendment violations. Getting fired isn't a threat to our rights as Americans.

The topic of exactly what he said is a whole other issue. I've already made my religious beliefs known. Anything that can be used as an excuse to deny anyone else their rights as a human and prevent individual happiness has no place in 2014. Using the bible as your basis to be a complete asshole doesn't make you any less of an asshole, regardless of what you tell yourself.

Also, as a multi-millionaire white man in the 21st century, don't EVER pretend that you know what pre-civil rights blacks were thinking/feeling/going through. Those comments were infinitely more offensive than anything he said about homosexuality.

Mr. Robertson, you fucked up. You let an entire world of people who are more passionate, intelligent and most of all more powerful than you know what a completely uneducated piece of shit you are. No one is violating your First Amendment rights. We're simply expressing ours.
