Fair Weather Fans

Last night after posting a mildly funny photo related to Alabama's Sugar Bowl loss to Oklahoma on Facebook I was called out for being a "hater" and somehow jealous of Alabama's recent success. The problems with this accusation are multiple:

  1. I don't really give a shit about college football. I don't have a favorite team. I just watch for the enjoyment of a (hopefully) good game.
  2. I have no issue with Alabama. 85% of their fans however...

As a lifelong Cubs fan nothing bothers me more in sports than bandwagon jumping. Rooting for the team of the moment only to abandon them when it's time for rebuilding.

The vast majority of Alabama fans on social media didn't give a damn about the Crimson Tide until 2009. Most people point to Nick Saban's hiring, but considering they were still pretty bad those first 2 years their sudden increase in popularity didn't come until later.

I see people post about "bleeding crimson" who were Tennessee fans 4 years ago.

The typical 2014 Alabama fan has likely at various times rooted for the Cowboys, the Yankees, the Lakers and most recently the Miami Heat.

It's insulting to me as someone who supports a team that hasn't won a championship in mine, my parents or my grandparent's lifetimes. Sticking with a team through thick and thin, criticizing the mistakes, basking in the glory no matter how fleeting.

Loyalty is one of the most integral parts of fandom, or at least it should be.
