This week's entry comes from a band whose namesake had an amazing pedigree but their music never quite lived up to the hype.
By 1988 Led Zeppelin was arguable more popular than they'd ever been when they were together. Robert Plant had only recently started performing Zep songs in his solo sets, Jimmy Page had just released his first solo album and Zeppelin had reunited for the Atlantic Records 40th Anniversary show with young Jason Bonham filling in for his late father, legendary drummer John Bonham.
Instead of taking the money and doing the much rumored reunion tour (a trend that lasts to this day), the members went their separate ways again leaving Jason to put together his own band, the eponymously named Bonham.
Recruiting a Plant soundalike in vocalist Daniel MacMaster the band quickly recorded their first record in the summer of '89 and gained a ton of press and hype leading up to it's release, 2 videos in rotation on MTV and a tour opening for The Cult should've lead to much greater success, but the band and album never caught on like expected. A follow up 2 years later was forgotten almost immediately and the band broke up shortly thereafter.
Since then Jason Bonham has made a career playing in various "supergroups", doing a percussion tribute to his Dad and eventually filling the Zep drum stool again for another one off reunion in 2007. Daniel MacMaster passed away in 2008, ending any hope for a Bonham reformation.
Enjoy the only band that had a genetic right to sound a little bit too much like the mighty Zeppelin,
