Considering no one actually reads this blog, this seems as good a place as any to announce what those have known me well enough have known for a very long time: I’m an atheist.
I was raised a Christian, Southern Baptist to be exact. I went to a Baptist school until 4th grade. I’d likely have gone even longer but my parents’ desire for me to have a Christian upbringing was outweighed by the cost of tuition. It was a school where memorizing bible verses was as much a part of your grade as math and English. Even then something about that didn’t seem right.
The years have seen me go from fervent Christian to asking questions back to Christianity (briefly) and finally complete non-believer.
The world is a wonderful place, and refusing to accept the role that science has had in it’s creation is insulting to our intelligence as human beings. Putting your faith in fairy tales (no matter how long they’ve been passed down) is ridiculous.
Not accepting Christ as my savior doesn’t make me a bad person. I still know right from wrong. I still do my part to make the world a better place. I just do it of my own freewill and not in anticipation of some rewarding afterlife.
And if I’m wrong? I’d like to think if there is a God (s)he values love, kindness and understanding over unquestioning faith in something none of us can truly prove. If that’s the case, I’ve got a leg up on most of the “Christians” I’ve known.
