Starting a new tradition this week where I recommend a band or album from my metal crazy youth. Nothing obvious that sold millions of records, but lesser known stuff I cherished from my circa-1989 cassette collection.
To kick this off is my favorite no hit wonder from that whole era, the Sea Hags.
Formed in 1986, the band first gained attention a year later when their demo tape was produced by Metallica's Kirk Hammett. Finally signing to Chrysalis Records (a label not known for hard rock or metal) in 1988 and releasing their debut album the following spring.
Despite major write-ups in Circus, RIP and Hit Parader as well as heavy rotation on MTV's 'Headbanger's Ball' the album disappeared quickly and has been all but forgotten by most metal fans. Addiction and mismanagement led the band to break up by the end of 1989. Their producer Mike Clink (of 'Appetite For Destruction' notoriety) was famously quoted as saying "There's only so far you can go with three alcoholics and a junkie"
Below is the only single/video the band released and one of my favorite tracks on the album. For years this CD was easily found in $0.99 cut out bins, but it's gotten a bit more scarce over time. You can still pick up used copies on Amazon for less than $20. If you're a fan of GNR, 70's Aerosmith or even the New York Dolls you could find worse ways to spend you money.
