PPV Was The Downfall of Boxing

I remember as a kid watching all the major fights with my Dad. Sugar Ray Leonard, Marvin Hagler, Leon and Michael Spinks, George Foreman, Roberto Duran, even the beginning of Tyson’s career. All of their matches were on regular broadcast TV, or HBO at least. They were events.

I really wanted to see the Mayweather/Canelo fight tonight, but $74.99 to watch anything is ridiculous. Put this fight on ABC and charge advertisers an arm and a leg. They’d still be lining up to sponsor it. The ratings would be through the roof. How many average working people can shell out almost a hundred bucks for a Saturday night of TV viewing?

I realize this fight will still be bought by millions, but the money could be larger for everyone. And the audience sure as hell could be too.
